The Impact of Self-Awareness on Leadership

Self-awareness is a leader’s ability to accurately recognize their own emotions, strengths, limitations, and values. Today, during session one of the Professional Development Leadership Series I shared a story about a time I was working early in my career as a consultant to help an office manager embrace computer scheduling instead of using a paper calendar.  Let’s just say it didn’t go very well…and for several reasons. A few of them were due to my self-awareness and I needed to be more patient, communicate with more sensitivity and understand how dealing with change can be stressful to people, especially embracing new technology.

Other dynamics to self-awareness include:

  • Improved Decision-Making: Self-aware leaders recognize when biases, fatigue, or stress might cloud their judgment. This awareness creates a vital pause between stimulus and response, reducing errors and hasty decisions.

  • Enhanced Team Trust & Culture: When leaders are in tune with how their words and moods affect others, they act as stabilizing anchors during crises. This emotional regulation builds psychological safety, encouraging employees to openly share ideas and take risks.

  • Effective Conflict Resolution: Leaders who understand their own behavioral triggers can navigate disagreements objectively. Rather than reacting defensively, they can de-escalate tension and mediate conflicts fairly.

  • Authenticity & Empathy: Acknowledging one’s own limitations fosters vulnerability and transparency. This builds credibility and ensures the leader’s intentions align with how their team actually experiences them.

  • Continuous Growth: Self-aware leaders are highly receptive to constructive feedback. By actively identifying their blind spots, they continually refine their skills and adapt their management styles to meet evolving team needs

What area of self-awareness do you need to learn, grow to lead differently? I’ve opened a few slots on my calendar for complimentary coaching sessions in June for people interested in going to the next level in leadership.  Are you ready, let’s chat?
